Prevention in the kitchen and outdoors: physical barriers against laying
Prevention remains more reliable than any curative treatment. Blowflies detect the volatile compounds of protein decomposition from a distance and lay eggs within seconds of contact.
- Always use a food cover or fine mesh cloth over any exposed meat, including during cutting
- In bushcraft or barbecue situations, keep the meat in a closed cooler until cooking, without any buffer time in the open air
- In the kitchen, close windows without screens during preparation, or work under a functioning extractor hood
- Immediately clean cutting surfaces and meat juices, which attract secondary laying

Physical protection is paramount over any repellent. Essential oil or vinegar spray solutions reduce the attractiveness of the area, but they do not provide a reliable barrier against a fly determined to lay eggs.
Blowflies in the domestic environment: identifying an established infestation
The repeated presence of blowflies in the house often signals a laying site established elsewhere than on the countertop. Non-sealed trash cans, leftover meat in poorly managed compost, or a dead animal in a sanitary void are common sources.
We recommend treating the source rather than individual flies. A vinegar trap or sticky tape captures adults, but as long as the laying substrate exists, the population renews. Inspection should cover hard-to-reach areas: under furniture, ducts, garbage rooms.
