We do not pay the same amount depending on whether we hire a directly employed worker (via CESU), a self-employed individual, or a landscaping company. The hourly rate of a gardener ranges between 20 and 50 euros per hour, and this wide range is almost entirely explained by the status.
A gardener hired through CESU costs less per gross hour, but one bears the employer’s contributions and administrative management. A self-employed gardener typically charges at the lower end of the range, around 25 to 30 euros. A landscaping company, which includes travel, insurance, and professional equipment, tends to charge between 35 and 50 euros.
To accurately assess the price of an hour of a gardener in your area, it is recommended to request at least three quotes, specifying the size of the plot and the expected services. Regional disparities are real: a gardener in a densely urbanized area often charges more than in a rural area, if only due to travel time.
Service Rates: Mowing, Hedge Trimming, and One-Time Jobs
The hourly rate tells only part of the story. Many gardeners charge by the square meter or linear meter depending on the type of work. Knowing these rates helps verify the consistency of a quote.
Lawn Mowing
Mowing is commonly charged between 0.25 and 0.50 euros per square meter. On a medium-sized plot (a few hundred square meters), one quickly reaches a flat rate of one to two hours of work, including collection. The frequency of mowing is as important as the area: a lawn mowed every two weeks in season logically costs double that of a monthly mowing.
Hedge and Shrub Trimming

Gardening Tax Credit: The Lever That Changes the Actual Budget
The 50% tax credit for small home gardening work remains in effect in 2026. The annual ceiling is set at 5,000 euros of expenses per household, resulting in a maximum tax benefit of 2,500 euros. This scheme applies to services provided by an organization declared as personal services (SAP) or a directly employed worker.
In practice, the bill is halved. An annual garden maintenance contract between 300 and 1,200 euros only actually costs 150 to 600 euros after the tax credit. This calculation should be made before comparing a declared SAP gardener with a non-eligible provider.

Feedback on this point varies, but it is often found that a contract is cheaper annually than isolated cumulative interventions.
An annual contract also allows you to lock in an hourly rate for the entire season, whereas independent gardeners sometimes adjust their prices in spring when demand surges.
For a medium-sized garden, the annual maintenance budget ranges from a few hundred euros to just over a thousand euros, before applying the tax credit. For a large plot with hedges, fruit trees, and flower beds, the amount can exceed this level.
- Compact garden (less than 100 m²): a few mowing visits and one or two hedge trimmings per year are generally sufficient.
- Medium plot (100 to 500 m²): a contract with bi-weekly mowing in season and two annual trimmings is the most common formula.
- Large plot (over 500 m²): plan for a package including mowing, trimming, green waste removal, and possibly an annual pruning.
